CHINESE SUCCESSES
JAPANESE RETREATING TOWARDS CANTON-KOWLOON * RAILWAY. REPORTED USE OF POISON GAS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) CHUNGKING, January 28. An army communique states: “Chinese forces, taking advantage of the capture of Tamshui, are driving the Japanese towards the Canton-Kowloon railway. The Chinese have retaken Pingshen and Lungkang, from which the Japanese are retreating towards Samchun, on the railway bordering the territories of Hong Kong. In East Kwantung, Central Suiyuan and South Anhwei, the Japanese were repulsed with heavy casualties. The Japanese used poison gas in the Suiyuan assault. The Japanese brought five thousand fresh troops from Canton to Sheklung and Tseng Cheng, but the Chinese launched a violent counterattack, forcing an enemy retreat along the entirb front.
