MR CHURCHILL’S SPEECH PRESS COMMENT. REACTIONS IN GREAT BRITAIN AND ELSEWHERE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 28. Mr Churchill’s speech has been favourably received by the entire free world, but some of the reactions in this country suggest that criticism of the Government has not been completely stilled. The “New York Times” sums up
American opinion by saying that Mr Churchill will get his vote of confidence and deserves it. It adds that the news that American bombers would soon be in action over Germany has been received with particular pleasure. The “Montreal Star,” in an article headed “Churchill Rallies the Empire,” says that, despite the bad news he conveyed, the Prime Minister s words brought comfort and cheer. Australian papers welcome the decision to give that country representation in the Empire War Cabinet. The “Sydney Sun” criticises the delay in formulating a plan to meet the Japanese attack in the Pacific, but adds that Australians are not content to dwell on past mistakes. The main points is to repair them as quickly as possible. The London Press is unanimous in insisting that the country needs Mr Churchill to lead it 'to victory. All the newspapers express appreciation of Jthe Prime Minister’s decision to send arms to Russia and the Middle East rather than the Far East, but criticise Mr Churchill’s personal assumption of responsibility for everything that has gone wrong.
