DRASTIC ACTION

4 NON-ESSENTIAL INDUSTRIES TO CLOSE AUSTRALIA’S WAR PROGRAMME. CONCENTRATION &N PLANE CONSTRUCTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) PERTH, January 27. Hundreds of Australian factories will be closed within the next few weeks by the Commonwealth Government. This drastic step was announced today by the Prime Minister, Mr Curtin. ■ He said the Government was determined to abolish non-essential industry and use all labour and machinery possible for war production. The major task would be to rush aeroplane construction. Mi- Curtin appealed to employers not to waste time arguing with the Government. “See how quickly you can adapt yourself to the new state of affairs,” he said. “Our war mobilisation means there will soon be in Australia a social order the very antithesis of that which hitherto prevailed.”
