JAPANESE ADVANCE
CONVOY SIGHTED OFF JOHORE COAST STUBBORN FIGHTING ON LAND. THAI AIRCRAFT IDENTIFIED IN ACTION. LONDON, January 26. Today’s Singapore communique states that early this morning an enemy convoy, including warships and two merchantmen, was sighted by our aircraft off Endau, on the east coast of Johore. Endau had already been evacuated by our forces. No enemy activity is reported in the Mersing area. At Batu Pahat the enemy succeeded, after severe fighting, in occupying the town. Bomber aircraft of the Far Eastern Command attacked targets during the night at Batu Pahat and also successfully raided the aerodrome at Kuala Lumpur. As a result of an attack on enemy shipping off Muar a 600-ton vessel was left listing. Tokio radio yesterday claimed that the Japanese were within 62 miles of Singapore, but were meeting with stubborn resistance. The Japanese, it said, captured Mersing, endangering the Kalai reservoir, which supplies Singapore. Thai aircraft have been identified among the enemy forces in Malaya.
