POTTER CATTLE

PAYMENT TO FARMERS. The prices paid for potter cows and bulls were discussed at today’s meeting of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. Mr J. H. Bremner, Pahiatua, wrote stating that he thought the executive should ask the Minister of Marketing that the advance in price for potter cows should be made retrospective, as the thousands of cOws already slaughtered this season would undoubtedly be sold under the new contract at the advanced price. He also drew attention to the low price being paid for potter bulls.

The secretary (Mr R. H. Williams) stated that potter bulls were going down the shute. This was in reply to a question raised by Mr J. C. Cooper, who said that if the bulls were being dealt with in that manner they were at present getting all that they were worth.

In regard to the other point raised by Mr Bremner it was stated that it would be rather difficult, if the price were made retrospective, to get tho data for making the payment and to ensure that the payment should reach the farmer and not the dealer. The matter was referred to the Dominion Secretary.
