SPLENDID THRUST
MADE BY THE RUSSIANS
Between Leningrad and Smolensk HUGE WEDGE DRIVEN INTO GERMAN LINE FIVE THOUSAND MILES OF TERRITORY CLEARED OF ENEMY LONDON, January 23. A Russian advance of 70 miles is reported between Smolensk and Leningrad. The Russians have driven a huge wedge 65 miles long and cut off the German troops in the Leningrad area from the forces still retreating from the Moscow front. They are reported to be 100 miles from the frontier of Latvia. One of the main enemy railway lines has been cut and captured. In the last 15 days' 5,000 square miles of territory and more than 2,000 towns have been liberated. Viazma has been bypassed and Smolensk is seriously threatened. The German casualties are 17,000 killed and the captures include 2,600 mines, 800,000 cartridges, 20 radio stations and huge stores of food and fuel. _ . A Russian communique, transmitted by the Press Association, announces the recapture of Koholm, Toropets, Toropa, Zapadnayadvina, Olenino and Andreapol.
