HOME GUARD PARADE ATTENDANCE MAINTAINED. (“Times-Age” Special.) There was an excellent attendance at the weekly parade of the Home Guard on Tuesday night, when members present received instruction from Army officers in the use of the Vickers and “Tommy" guns. Hand grenade practice was also included in the evening’s activities. It is very encouraging to note that men are still marching into the ranks and that the attendance is being steadily maintained. CROQUET A GRADE INTER-CLUB MATCH. Under ideal weather conditions the Featherston and Haunui Clubs played a match on the Featherston Club’s lawn on Wednesday. The following arc the results, Featherston players being mentioned first in each instance:— Doubles: Mesdames Saunders and Roy Donald lost to Miss Esma Card and Mrs L. G. Rasmussen, 3/26; Mesdames G. Hyland and L. G. Benton beat Miss Nix and Mrs Hankers, 26/8. Singles: Mrs Saunders lost to Miss Esma Card 20/26; Mrs G. Hyland lost to Miss M. Nix, 9/26; Mrs L. G. Benton lost to Mrs Hankers, 17/26; Mrs Roy Donald lost to Mrs L. G. Rasmussen, 7/26. Recreation Room. Negotiations are being made to secure a suitable room where soldiers can spend theii’ leave in comfort. Donations of suitable furniture to furnish this room is urgently required. Games of any description also are needed, so it is earnestly hoped that the response to this worthy cause will be generous.’ Commission Received; Mr and Mrs W. Houston have been notified that their eldest son John had received a well-earned commission. It will be remembered he left New Zealand about a year ago to join the Fleet Air Arm. and he is now a sub-lieuten-ant. His many friends will extend to him their hearty congratulations upon his success. Borough Rates. Borough rates remaining unpaid after February 12 will have an additional 10 per cent added. Men Called Up. The following local married men without children have been called up for Territorial service:—Messrs A. R. Anear, E. J. Bourke, James Boyd, R. G. Burt, John Brodersen, A. J. Butler, T. G. Busch, R. M. Deadman, R. C. Elbe, Peter Habib, T. E, Goodwin, E. J. Hankers, A. S. Howell A. E. Knapp, E. A. O’Neale, W. J. Say well, J. H. Smith, W. R. Stuart and Ray Thorner, In Case of Emergency. A circular to all householders has been issued by the Borough Council, dealing with sanitary precautions in dwellings in cases of emergency, citizens would be well advised to thoroughly digest the information contained therein, so that it can be readily put into practice, if necessary. Personal Items. Mr and Mrs R. G. McKenzie ,of Ballance, are visiting Miss H. and Mr J. W. Card, Johnston Street. Miss Betty Holmes, who is connected with the W.A.A.F. at Rongotai, is spending her leave with her parents, Mr and Mrs E. C. Holmes, “Te Hopai.” Mrs M. Williams, of Longwood, is a visitor to Hawke’s Bay. The many friends of the Rev. J. R. Higgs, who underwent an operation in the Lewisham Hospital, Wellington, will be pleased to learn that his condition is reported to be satisfactory. Euchre Party. The Patriotic Committee held another popular euchre party last night in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, when the attendance was a record. The players obtaining the highest score were Mesdames R. G. McKenzie, a visitor, and A. W. Edwards, who tied, while Mrs Nicol was successful in winning the lucky number competition. A beautiful duchess set, embroidered and presented by Mrs J. E. Willett, was won by Mrs Symons, of Revans Street. Another competition for a cake donated by Mrs Stanley Benton was drawn during the evening, and was won by Miss H. Card. These card parties are becoming very popular with the public generally, and are well supported. ■ COSY THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. Tonight a story packed with drama, desires, love and adventure will be screened—“ Youth Takes a Fling,” with Joel McCrea and Andrea Leeds in the leading roles. (Approved for ’ universal exhibition). Also shown will be “Wyoming,” featuring Wallace Beery and Ann Rutherford. (Recommended by censor for adults).
