Sale of Health Stamps.
Results of the first three months of the 1941 health stamp campaign were announced yesterday by the Postmas-ter-General, Mr Webb. He said that sales of health stamps for this period showed an appreciable increase over those for the corresponding period of the previous year. They were almost equal to the sales for the first three months of the 1939 campaign when conditions generally were more normal. The December sales for the Dominion, said Mr Webb, amounted to £lOO7, a small decrease when compared with the sales for December, 1940, but the total sales so far this summer showed an increase of 26.9 per cent over those for the first three months of the 1940 campaign. Early Settlers’ Gathering. Hymns sung by Wellington’s first settlers when they landed on the beach at Petone 102 years ago, were sung again by their descendants yesterday, when the Wellington Early Settlers’ and Historical Association held its annual gathering. Bearing a replica of the sailing ship, Lady Nugent, a large cake was presented by descendants of John and Sophia Southee, passengers in that ship, which arrived at Wellington on March 17, 1841. The cake was cut by the oldest woman members present, Mrs E. Mapleson (93 years), and Mrs M. Halley and Miss C. A. Allan (90 years). Mr W. 8., Allen (Carterton) presented to the association a piece of timber from a matai tree split by Mr Edwin Ticehurst in Greytown in the early 1850’s, and adzed and hand dressed to form the top of a chest of drawers. The timber will be used to make a presidential table for the association.
