FORGOTTEN THOUSANDS
MONEY LEFT IN BANKS. MELBOURNE WOMAN’S £1456. Some people leave money in the bank and forget all about it. The Commonwealth Gazette contains a list of about 2000 accounts, in the Commonwealth Savings Bank at its various branches, which have been to all intents and purposes “dead” for more than seven years. No one has made a deposit or a withdrawal during that period, or made any inquiry regarding the accounts. In accordance with the Commonwealth Bank Act, the money standing in credit in these accounts has been transferred to the depositors’ unclaimed fund. If no claim is made within 10 years the moneys will become the absolute property of the bank. Standing to the credit of Marie L. G. Lia, in the Melbourne branch is £1456 in two acounts, while someone named William Powell has left £1452 in the Sydney branch, and apparently forgotten all about it. One Morris Dib Abaid left behind £555 in the Redfern, New South Wales, branch, and Moris Abaid left £577 in the Sydney branch. Possibly one man owned both accounts.
