STAND AT MOULMEIN EXPECTED THAI TROOPS ASSISTING JAPANESE. ACTION CAUSES WIDESPREAD ANGER. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, January 22. While it is officially stated in Rangoon that new Japanese thrusts into Burma are expected almost certainly within the next ten days, a correspondent reports that preparations are being made for a . British stand at Moulmein. Besides Thai troops in the Miyawaddy area, Thailanders are engaged in South Burma and other parts of the frontier. A Burmese official said: “If the Thailanders are allowing their army to attack Burma, in addition to leasing their territory to Japan, it is time we ceased to entertain the hope of finding honour in Thailand. Thailand’s co-operation with the Japanese forces has caused widespread anger.” JAPANESE CLAIM ALLEGED DESTRUCTION OF PLANES. (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 22. 'The Tokio official radio announced that Imperial Headquarters claimed the destruction of ten Netherlands. East Indies aircraft, including six flyingboats, since January 15. It was also claimed that four Curtiss Tomahawk fighters were shot down in the Philippines, in a fifteen-minute battle on Thursday. GAS MASKS DISTRIBUTED TO CIVILIANS IN HAWAII. TO BE CARRIED AT ALL TIMES. (Received This Day, 11.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 22. Army officials distributed hundreds of thousands of gas masks to civilians in Hawaii today and warned people to carry them at all times. Civilians were required to produce flinger-printed identification cards before the masks were issued. MOVED TO MAINLAND THE ENTIRE POPULATION OF HONG KONG. RELIEF.ACTION BY CHINESE GOVERNMENT. An official spokesman stated that virtually the entire population of Hong Kong, numbering 1,000,000, has been compelled to leave for the mainland. The Chungking Government has allocated a large sum for the relief of these 'evacuees. TIMELY ACTION DESTRUCTION OF OILFIELDS IN BORNEO. IN ANTICIPATION OF ATTACK. (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, January 22. It is authoritatively stated in Batavia that all oil installations and oil wells at Balik Papan (in Borneo) have already been destroyed, it being obvious that the enemy’s intention, to attack Ealik Papan with superior forces, to take possession of its important oilfields. CHINESE SUCCESSES IN VARIOUS FIGHTING AREAS. ADDITIONAL TROOPS SENT TO BURMA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) CHUNGKING, January 22. A communique states: “Some 400 of 1000 Japanese, besieged at Hwaiyang, on the Honan front, were killed while attempting to break out. “Chinese units, operating in the Can-ton-Kwantung area, routed Japanese outposts and sank two enemy motorboats off the shore. “Successful sorties were made in the Hupeh region. “Additional Chinese reinforcements have joined the British defenders of Burma.”
