PROGRESSING IN SEVERAL AREAS Indications of Important Gains VIOLENT FIGHTING SOUTH-WEST OF KALININ RENEWAL OF ACTIVITY AGAINST FINNS LONDON', January 22. The Russians are reported to be advancing 1 not only west of Mojaisk, but in other areas, notably to the south-west, in the region of Orel. The Moscow radio states that 44 towns and villages have been recaptured during the past few days. In yesterday’s fighting alone, 1,400 German officers and men were killed. The “Izvestia” says violent fighting is taking place in an important town in a sector west of Kalinin. It is thought this town may be Rzhev, an important railway centre 80 miles south-west of Kalinin. Fighting has again flared up in the extreme north, on the Finnish front.
