Prior to the outbreak of war, the main source of Eire’s timber supply was the Baltic area. When that was cut off, some supplies were obtained from Canada. Now these have almost ceased, and the Government has found it necessary to take control of existing stocks of imported timber and of all native supplies. The purchase of timber exceeding £5 in value is prohibited. except under special permit. This is having a serious effect upon building and other construction projects, many of which are being postponed until the emergency is over.
