WORST FOR YEARS
THE WINTER IN EUROPE CONTINENT SWEPT BY ICY BLASTS. SUSPENSION OF TRAFFIC IN BALKANS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 21. Europe is in the grip of the worst winter for years. The British Press is permitted to refer only to the weather in the Straits of Dover, where Arcticlike conditions prevail tonight. The Balkans are experiencing the severest weather since 1916, with temperatures between 22 and 40 degrees below zero (Fahrenheit). Snow has fallen continuously for four days in Rumanian, resulting in complete suspension of the road and rail traffic in many areas. The Vichy Government has relaxed the prohibition on the sale of alcohol because of the biting cold. The icy blasts are sweeping Europe from the east, bringing the atmosphere of the Russian steppes as far as the Netherlands.
