HORRORS OF FAMINE
ENDURED IN GREECE AXIS BENT ON EXTERMINATING PEOPLE. CHILDREN RAKING REFUSE FOR FOOD. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 21. All accounts of the suffering and famine in Greece and the heroic resistance of the people have been understated, according to an Athenian barrister who has arrived at Beirut, says the "Daily Telegraph’s” correspondent. The Italians and Germans have one desire—extermination of the Greek people, whom they detest, he said. The Germans attribute the setback in Russia to the Greek resistance, through which vital time was lost, and therefore the Greek nation must pay by slow death. Household effects and foodstuffs are being sent to Germany; foodshops in the towns are empty, but the villagers have concealed part of their crops. Underfed children in Athens and Salonika rake through refuse in the hope of finding food, and emaciated women stand in queues for hours for the most meagre rations. The stoical women bless the R.A.F. pilots in spite of the Greek victims of the raids. The relief ship Kurtuls, bound for Greece with 2000 tons of food from England and America, ran on the rocks off Bandirma, in the Sea of Marmora. Her position is believed to be precarious. There were no casualties.
The Kurtulus is also carrying 350 food parcels from Turkish journalists to Greek journalists.
