REINFORCEMENTS RUSHED TO ROMMEL.
UNDER COVER OF RAIDS ON MALTA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON. January 17. In the central Mediterranean. British naval aircraft successfully bombed a supply ship which was escorted by a destroyer during the night of January 15-16, states a Royal Air Force (Middle East) communique. Two probable hits were obtained on the ship, which stopped with clouds of black smoke issuing from it. The Italian newspaper “La Stampa,” Milan, claims that large supplies of men and material have been rushed to General Rommel under cover of the persistent raids on Malta. It is announced in London that the enemy air attacks on Malta are being maintained. Ten alerts were sounded in the last 24 hours. More bombs have been dropped and slight civilian damage has occurred. R.A.F. fighters have been up intercepting the raiders. One bomber was hit but escaped.
