ABATTOIR STOPPAGE
DISPUTE AT AUCKLAND.
AN ALLEGED ULTIMATUM.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day.
Contrary to views expressed today concerning the stoppage of work at the City Abattoirs yesterday, Mr Hunter, the Conciliation Commissioner, said it was an ordinary stopwork meeting and later those required remained working until five o’clock. Normal work will be resumed on Monday.
The Chairman of the City Council Health Committee said the men issued an ultimatum that, unless given increased wages, they would stop work. They could not be given a rise and ceased work.
Mr Hunter said the meeting was held to discuss the possibility of obtaining relief from excessive overtime hours. The men also were called out of bed at 2 o’clock in the morning, after finishing work at a late hour. He said the dispute did not affect meat consumers.
