STATE THEATRE
"KIPPS.” . Based on the novel that has charmed readers fbr more than a generation, H. G. Wells’s “Kipps” will be shown tonight at the State Theatre Michael Redgrave as Kipps, has been placed in an outstanding role, and as the simple young man, who blunders awkwardly, hesitatingly through life, a shop assistant with a small-town mind, caught momentarily in the artificiality of provincial society, tasting dubiously the delights of life above his station, he is excellent. His Ultimate salvation is his own honest simplicity, his realisation that his happiness lies where he started, in the confines of his own narrow small-town world. Supporting Michael Redgrave is Diana Wynyard, who gives a fine performance. Phyllis Calvert is very good as Ann, Kipps’ boyhood sweetheart, and fine comedy relief is provided in the film by the inclusion of Arthur Riscoe as Chitterhouse, Kipps’ actor friend.
