RAM FAIR
4 WAIRARAPA SHEEPBREEDERS SALE AT SOLWAY. TOP PRICE FOR SOUTHDOWNS 230 GUINEAS. The Wairarapa Stud Sheepbreeders’ annual stud ram fair commenced before a large bench of buyers at the Solway Showgrounds this morning. Prominent Wairarapa and outside breeders’ names appeared in the catalogue and a uniformly good quality animal was brought into the ring. The yarding comprised Southdown and Romney one-shear rams. As the sale progressed passings became frequent, it being obvious that only rams of type and quality were being sought after. Prices for the animals sold were satisfactory to vendors. South Island buyers were lacking at the sale on account of no connecting boat facilities, but there was a good percentage of local buyers. The sale of Southdown rams was completed at the luncheon adjournment and a start was made with Romney rams in the afternoon. Messrs W. J. Gimblett and A. L. Wheeler, two prominent outside breeders did not offer their intended entries on account of transport difficulties. The top price in the Southdowns, of £230, was paid by Messrs Dalgety and Co. for a fine animal offered by Mr R. M. Perry.
