NARROWLY BEATEN
MR CHARLES NELSON MINERS’ FEDERATION BALLOT IN AUSTRALIA. SEQUEL TO SECRET FUNDS INQUIRY. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr Charles Nelson was defeated for the position of general president of the Miners’ Federation by a young Cessnock mine worker, Mr H. Wells. It was the biggest poll for a mining ballot for years. Mr Wells received a majority of 140 in a poll of 15,178 votes.
A message from Sydney on December 5 reported that: “The central executive of the Coal Miners’ Federation unanimously decided not to suspend the general president, Mr Charles Nelson, arising out of the secret fund report, but to permit him to contest the annual ballot for the presidency, which will allow the rank and file of the union to determine his position.”
