SOVIET PRESSURE ON GERMANS
In North, South and Centre ENCIRCLEMENT OF KEY TOWN OF OREL THREAT TO INVADERS IN LENINGRAD ZONE LONDON, .January 13. German reports speak of Russian attacks in the Crimea and south of Leningrad and say that these attacks were repulsed. The enemy admits, however, that the Russians are preparing fresh counter-attacks. The Germans also report another landing, by a small Russian detachment, on the south coast of the Crimea. There seems to be no doubt that the enemy is rapidly losing the initiative in this southernmost sector. A new Russian thrust is developing south of Lake Ilmen, where the Germans speak of fighting’ in the Valdai Hills. If this attack is developed, the German invaders in the Leningrad zone may be trapped.
At the same time the Russians are heavily intensifying’ their pressure on the southern sector of the front west of Moscow. There are indications that the Russians are well advanced towards an encirclement of the important key town of Orel, 200 miles south of Moscow, on the main railway to Kharkov.
