MUST BE RETAINED
SINGAPORE AND DUTCH INDIES
DECLARATION BY CHINESE SPOKESMAN. DEBATES THAT ARE IDLE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 10,5 a.m.) CHUNGKING, January 13. A Chinese spokesman said the united nations must retain Singapore and the Netherlands East Indies. His comment coincided with the Chinese Press criticism of the British and American policy of Europe first and the Pacific later. The Press contended that it was a sheer fallacy to expect Japan, entrenched in Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies, to collapse even if Hitler collapses. The spokesman added: “There has been some debate on the relative importance of fighting Hitler or the Japanese. Such debates are idle since all are agreed on the importance of Singapore and the Netherlands East Indies, the Japanese capture of which would nullify the Allied blockade and give Japan resources that would enable her to carry on vigorously and indefinitely.”
