MACARTHUR'S FORCES
MORE THAN HOLDING THEIR OWN Heavy Losses Inflicted on Enemy AT RELATIVELY LIGHT COST JAPANESE ARTILLERY'OUTCLASSED LONDON, January 13. General MacArthur’s forces in the Philippines are more than holding their own against heavy Japanese attacks on their positions west of Manila. An important American success is announced in a War Department communique from Washington. In 24 hours of continuous artillery fighting, the American and Filipino artillery proved definitely superior. Columns of enemy tanks and other armoured vehicles as well as infantry concentrations were shattered and dispersed, with heavy loss to the enemy. The American and Filipino losses were relatively slight.
The American counter-battery fire was particularly effective. Eleven enemy batteries were silenced. The Japanese withdrew their batteries well to the rear of the positions they had occupied. Air activity was confined to dive-bombing' in support of the artillery.
There have been no further bombing’ attacks on the fixed fortifications in Manila Bay.
