INCENDIARY BOMBS
BRITISH TYPES INSPECTED.
TWO IN MASTERTON.
Two British incendiary bombs were inspected in Masterton this morning by a “Times-Age” representative. They are in shape like a gigantic pencil, 21 inches in length and weighing four pounds. These incendiaries are made in two types, explosive and non-explo-sive. In the case of the explosive type, according to experiments carried out elsewhere, the bomb explodes not earlier than 2j minutes after landing. The two types are similar in appearance.
The top end of the incendiary bomb, which contains the detonator and pricker, screws out of the remainder, in which the thermite is placed. By reversing a small shield inside the detonator end the bomb is rendered harmless before it is ready to drop. This shield is then placed in its correct position, but a safety catch still prevents any premature ignition until it is released.
The German incendiaries are only about 10 inches in length and weigh 2jlb. They are fitted also with a fish tail, which causes a screaming sound as the bomb drops.
