TREATY WITH ALLIES
ABOUT TO BE SIGNED BV IRAN NEW SHAH INTERVIEWED. NEED OF COUNTERING GERMAN PROPAGANDA. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 9. A treaty will soon be signed by Iran according to Britain and Russia special rights, including the control of military transport through , the country and permission to station troops for the duration of the war and accepting British and Russian armed protection. This is reported by the “New York Times” correspondent in Salzerger, following on an interview in Teheran with the Shah, Reza Pahlevi. The 21-year-old ruler said the Axis was attempting to create internal troubles in Iran by means of propaganda broadcasts and the use of agents throughout the country describing Hitler as a Mahommedan and direct descendant of the Prophet. The Shah deplored the lack of successful British counterpropaganda. Iran’s cause, he said, was naturally linked with those of the democracies. It was unfortunate that Iran could not take a more active part in the war for democracy. Nevertheless she was playing an important part as the trade route to Russia was being extensively used. The Shah expressed gratitude for British shipments of wheat and other food.
