ANNOUNCED BY RUSSIANS Great Enemy Losses on Many Parts of Front INITIATIVE HELD BY SOVIET FORCES FURTHER PROMISING PROGRESS IN CRIMEA LONDON, January 9. A Russian communique reports the capture of several towns. An earlier Soviet broadcast stated that the enemy continued to.retreat on many parts of the front. They are losing’ a great number of men in killed and wounded and much equipment, including tanks. “The initiative has been taken out of enemy hands,’’ the broadcast stated, “and the German machine is broken.’’ In the Crimea the Soviet garrison at Sebastopol has taken the initiative and the Germans are also threatened by other Soviet forces advancing’ from the east. One German column on its way to Kerch was destroyed by Russian bombs and shells. Bitter fighting is reported on the Moscow and northern fronts. Soviet troops in the Karelian Isthmus continue to advance.
