BRITAIN’S FOOD STOCKS BUT CONSERVATION HELD NECESSARY. ON ACCOUNT OF EXTENSION OF WAR. LONDON. January 9. Britain's stocks of staple foodstuffs are now better than before the war. This was disclosed today by Major Lloyd George, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food. Major Lloyd George said rations had been increased during 1941 and there had been every hope of the position being fully maintained during 1942. It has actually improved, but the situation had changed suddenly when Japan entered the war. This meant that United States merchant ships would be attacked as ours had been. It would not now be possible to increase rations and many of them might have to be reduced. “We shall have to tighten our belts.” Major Lloyd George said, “but wp shall still be the best fed nation in Europe.”
