AIR ACTIVITY IN ADVERSE WEATHER. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.55 a.m.) RUGBY, January 9. A morning communique from Singapore states: “In the Klim River area our troops heavily engaged the enemy all yesterday. After a preliminary infantry assault the enemy attacked, down the main road, with tanks followed by infantry in lorries. Reports to date indicate that the fighting was severe and the casualties on both sides heavy. “Elsewhere in Malaya there is nothing to report. “Enemy aircraft made a further raid on Klang, on the coast south-west of Kuala Lumpur yesterday. A few casualties are reported. "Air activity has been reduced by adverse weather conditions. Our aircraft attacked enemy vessels north of the Anamaba Islands, some 200 miles off the east coast of the Malayan Peninsula. Several direct hits were made on the decks and sides of vessels. This morning our aircraft bombed two enemy merchant vessels in the Kuantan Estuary. Direct hits were made on one vessel of 4,000 tons and a large cloud of white smoke issued from it. There were several near misses on a smaller vessel. All our planes returned safely.”
