On their first official visit to Invercargill the Governor-General and Lady Newall arrived on Thursday night from Gore. Yesterday afternoon they were accorded a civic reception. They returned north today. Mr J. H. S. Cole. “Glen Isla,” Homebush, is visiting Wellington for the weekend Miss Ashwell, Short Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wanganui. Miss B. Frances, Renall Street, returned to Masterton todaj r from a visit to Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs Prendergast Knight and Mrs Nairn, of Te Whiti, are staying at Akitio, Hawke’s Bay. Mrs A. W. McKenzie, Renall Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs Stanley Lamb, Devon Street. Masterton. is the guest of Lady Ransom, Dannevirke. Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs F. Cole, of Masterton, that their son, Gunner M. C. Cole, who is serving with the forces, in the Middle East, is safe and well.
The following, to be lieutenants (temp.) are posted to the Masterton Battalion of the Home Guard: J. Nunn, D. V. Banks, C. W. Abbott, W. J. S. Musgrove, H. G. King and T. H. Potter. Second Lieutenant (temp. Lieutenant) W. Ball, and Lieutenant *(temp.) D. B. Cameron, Ist Battalion, Ruahine Regiment, have been granted the temporary rank of captain. Mr H. Tai Mitchell, C.M.G., Rotorua, has been elected chairman of the Arawa Trust Board for the seventh time in succession. He has held office for the past 18 years. The Rt. Hon P. Fraser, Prime Minister, will leave Wellington for Auckland by the Limited express tomorrow night. He expects to return to Wellington on Tuesday morning. The Rev. W. M. Simpson, who has been for some time past occupying a Presbyterian pulpit in Roslyn, Dunedin, relieving the regular minister, is with Mrs Simpson, on a short visit to Masterton.
Miss Joan Cairns, of Masterton, has been successful in passing the practical examination for the Diploma of Associate in Elocution (A.T.C.L.) at' the examination conducted at the Wellington centre for the Trinity College of Music, London, by Mr Andersen Tyrer. Miss Cairns is a pupil of Mrs J. Huhne, L.T.C.L.
A guard of honour formed by New Zealanders awaited Miss Nora Kearns and Sapper Stanley Harcourt McCarthy after their marriage at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Worthing, England, recently. The bride has been living at 18 Cobden Road. Worthing, for nearly seven years. Many of her relations live in Ireland. The bridegroom is a New Zealander and comes from the Wairarapa. Wearing a turquoise frock with burgundy accessories and carrying a while pray-er-book, the bride was given away by a friend, Mr James Malone. Her sister, Miss Teresa Kearns, and Miss Kathleen Malone, were bridesmaids. The best man was Sapper Neil McCarthy. The honeymoon was spent at Croydon.
