ON HUDSON RIVER PIERS IN CENTRE OF NEW YORK. BRIGADES SET DESPERATE TASK. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, January 8. Hudson River piers at the corner of Forty-third Street, in the centre of New York City, caught fire early this morning. All the New York brigades, aided by fire-boats, worked desperately to prevent the fire spreading. The fire destroyed a largo pier, owned by the South American • and South African Steamship Company; also a number of barges. The Mayor of New York (Mr La Guardia) is standing by. Three firemen are missing. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
