A United States War’ Department communique states: “In the Philippines theatre, heavy fighting has been resumed along the entire front, with the enemy increasing pressure at all points. The front lines of the American and Philippine troops are being continuously bombed and machine-gunned by enemy aircraft. The defending troops are continuing their steady and valiant resistance.” FALSE REPORT CIRCULATED BY JAPANESE. ALLEGED ATTACK ON U.S.A. BATTLESHIPS. (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) WASHINGTON, January 7. An authorised Navy spokesman said today that there was not an iota of truth in a Japanese report that the Japanese attacked the United States battleships New Mexico and Mississippi and sunk one of them.
