WASTE PAPER

COLLECTION IN MASTERTON TO CEASE. SPLENDID EFFORT MADE. The collection of waste paper at the depot in Perry Street, Masterton, is to cease, as the storage space available is now required for other purposes and moreover, there are difficulties in arranging transport to Wellington. Masterton’s effort in collecting paper is said to have been the best of any country area in New Zealand. Since the scheme was started here some months ago no less than 50 bales of paper have been sent to Wellington and a further 16 bales are awaiting transport. This represents, roughly, about 20 tons of paper. In addition, newspaper which realised £3O for patriotic funds has been sold locally. Much of the work involved in handling the waste paper at the depot has been carried out by Mr George Ross. The public is requested to note that paper will no longer be received at the depot.

Dog Registration. The Masterton Borough Council advise that the registration of dogs for the current year has been extended to March 1, 1942, by regulation. Good Stone Fruit Crons.

Stone fruit crops in the Wairarapa are reported to be heavy this season, apricots especially. On account of the recent wet weather crops are late in colouring this season. Youth Before Court.

On a charge of having unlawfully converted a motor car, Mostyn William Clarke, aged 19 years, of Masterton, appeared before Mr L. J. Taylor, J.P., in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. On the application of the police a remand was granted until Friday.

Fine Park Display. Although the splendid border and bedding displays in the Masterton Park have had a buffetting from the recent gales they are well worth inspecting. Prior to the recent wet weather the park was being largely patronised by the public. The brilliant blooms and well kept surrounding are greatly admired.

Cost of Living. The retail-prices index (base: 192630 = 1000) for the three food groups for November was 1142, an advance of 29 points since October, says the Government Statistician. The abnormally high prices ruling for potatoes caused the index for the groceries group to advance 111 points (from 1192 to 1303), and this was not counterbalanced to any appreciable extent by the seasonal fall in meat prices, which reduced the index for the group 11 points (from 1148 to 1137). An increase of 1 point only was recorded in the index for the dairy-produce group, which now stands at 978.
