JAPANESE CHANGSHA OFFENSIVE ABORTIVE AND COSTLY ASSAULTS. HUGE LOSSES REPORTED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day. Noon.) CHUNGKING, January 4. Japan's third offensive against Changsha is breaking down, the Central News claims. Twenty thousand Japanese* troops are encircled near Changsha’s northern gates and another 10,000 are encircled in a distant suburb. Fierce fighting continues. Field reports state that repeated Japanese assaults since Friday have cost the Japanese 85,000 casualties. Japanese bombers are dropping incendiary bombs in an attempt to fire the heart of the city. Chinese machine-gunners decimated Japanese forces which entered the northern suburbs under cover of strong air support.
