GALLANT MALTA

WITHSTANDING HEAVY AIR ATTACKS VAIN ATTEMPTS TO PARALYSE R.A.F. NUMBER OF ENEMY PLANES SHOT DOWN. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.10 p.m.) RUGBY, January 1. A Cairo message states that although units of the German Air Force in Sicily have made almost hourly attempts during the last twelve days to paralyse the R.A.F. squadrons operating from Malta, British medium bombers continue relentlessly to hammer the Axis forces in their retreat into Tripolitania. To keep the enemy planes away, anti-aircraft batteries are waging ceaseless war on raiding Junkers 88s and their protecting Messerschmitts. Since this phase of the Battle of the Mediterranean opened on December 19, Malta has had 52 day and 47 night raids. So far, Hurricane fighters have destroye’d seven Junkers 88s and two fighters, while anti-aircraft guns have shot down three bombers.
