Fire in Wellington. A fire in the Army, Navy and Air Force headquarters building in Featherston Street, Wellington, shortly after 2 a.m. yesterday caused severe damage to the attic, flames bursting through the roof before the fire was extinguished. The headquarters of the three services are housed in the stone building with wooden interior construction, formerly the railways head office. There are three stories and the the attic. The part where the fire occurred was formerly the tearoom.
Over Four Tons of Knitted Wool.
During the past year Canterbury women knitted four and a half tons of wool into comforts for men of the armed forces and merchant navy. The goods have been sent to the National Patriotic Fund, the Navy League, Hobsonville Air Base, local stations, Burnham Camp and the merchant marine. Goods knitted were as follow:—Balaclavas, 963 dozen; gloves, 29 dozen; socks, 49 dozen; string gloves, 31; scarves, 725 dozen; pullovers, 51 dozen; seaboot stockings, 79 dozen; mittens, 1023 dozen; hussiffs, 1926. Elimination of Tuberculosis.
The expenditure of about £3200 in addition to Government compensation would be required in the first year if the Christchurch dairy district were to be declared a tuberculin-clean area, Mr. T. A. Coulter, stock inspector to the Department of Agriculture, told the milk committee of the Christchurch City Council in a report on the Christchurch milk industry. This sum, he suggested, might be met equally by local bodies and the trade; in subsequent years the amount required would be so small that it might be met by the trade alone.
Fire at Picture Theatre. Considerable damage to costly sound equipment behind the screen at the Plaza Theatre, Wellington, was caused by fire early on Saturday morning. Five machines and their crews from the Central Fire Station turned out in response to a call, given from a street fire alarm at 1.2 a.m. By a coincidence the brigade received a call to the same theatre at approximately the same time on the morning of December 29, 1936. The fire on that occasion started in the same place as it did on Satur'day, but then it spread along the roof lof the building and caused much more 'damage.
