THE PETAIN REGIME AXIS DEMANDS FOR TUNIS. DARLAN READY TO COMPLY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, December 27. A correspondent of “The Times” on the Italian frontier says that, marking the resumption of French-Italian diplomatic relations, an Italian Ambassador, Signor Gino Buti, has been sent to Paris. His appointment to Paris instead of to Vichy is interpreted to mean that an early eclipse of the Petain regime can be expected. Marshal Petain has not yielded to fresh Italian demands for Tunis, which the reverses sustained by the Axis in North Africa have made extremely urgent. General Rommel might have to cross the Tunis frontier, whereupon Vichy would have to disarm and intern the Axis forces if it followed the international practice. It is authoritatively reported, the correspondent says, that Admiral Darlan is ready to comply with the demands of the Axis and that he has already reached an agreement with the Italian Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, on territorial questions that is satisfactory to Italy, removing the last obstacle to complete Vichy co-opera-tion with the Axis.
