BRITISH OFFICIAL REPORT
TOLL TAKEN OF ENEMY PARTIES. ATTEMPTING TO ESCAPE SOUTHWARD. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, December 26. A Cairo Headquarters communique states: “Although isolated bodies in various stages of disorganisation still remain round Barce and south of Benghazi, the bulk of the retreating enemy now appears to be in the Jedabaya area. North of Jedabaya there is a certain amount of confused fighting, in which our troops are taking their toll of enemy parties attempting to escape southwards. During this fighting, six enemy tanks were knocked out yesterday, and in addition three enejyiy tanks, eleven armoured cars, eleven German light tanks and some German and Italian aircraft, together with a considerable amount of material, were found abandoned in the Barce area. In this same general’area, in addition to taking prisoners we recovered a number of British wounded, who were found in an Italian hospital.”
