AUSTRALIAN TROOPS EAGER TO MEET ENEMY IN MALAYA. SINGAPORE, December 25. Wiping about the Australian troops in Malaya and their eagerness to come face to face with the enemy, the Australian war correspondent says the men work like tigers all day getting ready for the big job ahead. “One sees earth flying, small trees crashing all round, and men’s backs glistening with sweat. There is no loafing on this job. If the enemy comes, these men have a huge task in front of them, and all know there is no withdrawal. The defence of ‘boomtown’ will be the Australian epic.” Their commander, Major-General Gordon Bennett, said the morale of the Australians was never higher. “I am proud to command a force that has inspired hundreds of messages of goodwill and expressions of confidence which I have received from all over Malaya, from British and native leaders alike.”
