Miss Beth Robinson, Wellington, is spending a few days in Masterton. Mrs G. A. Thompson, Napier, is the guest of Mrs S. Copp, Elizabeth Street, Masterton.
Mrs J. Perry and family, Taranaki, are staying with Mr and Mrs W. G. Lamb, Herbert Street, Masterton. Mrs Eames, Palmerston North, is staying with her mother, Mrs A. Anderson, Taratahi. Mr and Mrs N. Whiteman, Renall Street, Masterton, are staying at the Paraparaumu Beach. Miss Sheila Meredith, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs Laird Meredith, Mangapakeha. Mr Hector Nicolson, manager of the “Otaki Mail,” who has been on a visit to Masterton, returned home today.
Mr and Mrs J. Howes, Dannevirke, are visitors to- Masterton and are staying with Mrs S. Copp, Elizabeth Street.
Mrs David Monro and. family, Auckland, are staying with Mr and Mrs C. G. Monro, King Edward Street, Lansdowne.
Mrs Cuthbert Free, who has recently returned from Fiji, is the guest of Miss M. Perry, Essex Street Extension, Masterton.
The funeral of the late Mr William Percy Smith, of Tinui, took place this morning, the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich officiating. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Langdon, T. Langdon, L. D. Cameron, T. Forest, T. Stilborn, and E. Mclsaacs.
The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser,'has been informed that His Majesty the King has approved the award of the Distinguished Service Medal to the following in connection with the Battle of Crete:—Chief Petty Officer H. Pl Booth and A.B. A. S. Beck. Professor J. E. L. Cull is retiring from the Chair of Civil Engineering at Canterbury University College next year. His resignation, as from August 31, 1942, was accepted with regret by the college council, when it decided to grant him six months’ leave of absence as from March 1, and to send him a letter acknowledging his services to the School of Engineering. The funeral of the late Mr Donald Nicolson took place at Masterton yesterday afternoon. There was a representative attendance and a large number of wreaths covered the coffin. The Rev. Father Moore conducted the services at St. Patrick’s Church and at the graveside. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. B. Clarke (son-in-law, Nelson), D. Clarke (grandson, Nelson), P. G. Rose and J. Kerslake.
The death occurred yesterday of Mr John Donald Olds, aged 87, the oldest member of the Hastings branch of M.U.1.0.0.F. Born at Cornwall, England, Mr Olds came to New Zealand with his wife 66 years ago. He worked at Matapiro station for 14 years. Mr Olds then took a farm in Tollemache Road, Hastings, which he worked till he retired some years ago. His wife predeceased him four years ago, and his only daughter 26 years ago.
