The late Mr Nicolson was born on December 9, 1863, being the eldest son of the late Donald and Frances Ellen Nicolson, of Clareville. At an early age he entered the printing trade in the Wairarapa and was compositormachinist of the “News Letter” which was published in Masterton many years ago. After having worked on the “Carterton Observer,” “Wairarapa Star,” “Wairarapa Age” and other district newspapers, he left the printing trade and engaged in gardening until he retired some time ago. In his younger days the late Mr Nicolson was a well known athlete, being a noted long distance runner, winning many important races in the Wellington province. He was also a splendid footballer and formerly played with the Carterton and Red Stai’ Clubs. He was a keen fisherman and had a thorough knowledge of the trout streams and rivers of the Wairarapa, some of the biggest fish taken out of district streams falling to his rod. He was formerly a well known rifle shot, and a keen member of the old Carterton volunteers, having resided in the southern town for many years. He was a member of the New Zealand Volunteer Army which took part in operations against Te Kooti over sixty years ago. Possessing a genial nature he had a large circle of friends throughout the Wairarapa. He leaves a widow and grown-up family. Two brothers, Messrs Malcolm and Albert Nicolson, and a daughter died some years ago, while his only surviving brother is Mr Hector Nicolson, manager of the “Otaki Mail.”
