CARTERTON
CHRISTMAS EVE TRADE SPLENDID BUSINESS REPORTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) A large numbei’ of people paraded High Street on Christmas Eve and the shops report splendid business. The prohibition of car parking in the main street was appreciated, giving both old and young the free use of the roads without danger from motor traffic. The crowd was a very orderly one. BOWLING TOURNAMENT ABANDONED. Owing to the wet weather the pairs tourney which was to have been played today by the Carterton Bowling Club had to be abandoned. Tf the weather improves tomorrow another tournament will be held.
Post Office Business.
During Monday and Tuesday and particularly on Wednesday business at the Carterton Post and Telegraph Office was very brisk. Telegrams were not as numerous as in other years. A Prisoner of War.
Mr and Mrs H. G. Steffert, Senr., during the week received a letter from their son, Pte. A. R. Steffert, who is a prisoner of war in Germany, stating that he was enjoying good health and was being well cared for along with other New Zealand prisoners by the Red Cross Society, the members of which, he says, are doing excellent work. At the time of writing he was at work in the prison camp. Splendid Crop of Barley. A splendid crop of barley can be seen at South Carterton on the property of Mr L. S. Gallon. Personal. Mr and Mrs Sefton Hawker are visitors to Carterton, and are staying with Mr and Mrs E. H. Hawker, Pembroke Street. REGENT THEATRE TONIGHT’S PROGRAMME. For those who have not laughed since 1929 a brand new story full of fun will be found in “The Devil and Miss Jones,” featuring Jean Arthur and Robert Cummings. (Approved for Universal Exhibition.)
