BLINDNESS CURED
EYES OF DEAD SEE AGAIN. SUCCESS OF RUSSIAN METHOD. A Queensland doctor has successfully cured two persons of blindness by using the Russian Filitov method of grafting cornea taken from the eyes of dead persons, a Brisbane pathologist, Professor J. V. Duhig, has revealed. He made this statement at a cultural conference arranged by the N.S.W. Aid to Russia Committee. The doctor, Professor Duhig added, had operated after receiving instruction from Russia about the Filitov method.
Other leading medical officers paid tribute to Soviet Russia’s approach to health problems. Not only had the Russians excelled in industrial hygiene, but they had given to the world the valuable science of blood transfusion, Dr. Drew, Metropolitan Health Officer, told the conference.
The whole fabric of Russian medicine, said Dr. Drew, was built on the principle of attaining naitonal health and maintaining it. “Infectious diseases generally have declined in Russia since 1918,” he said. “Russians acknowledge the weakness of the human flesh, and instead of driving these weaknesses underground, where they may flourish unseen, they bririg them to the surface and deal with them openly.”
