GOLDEN WEDDING

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED YESTERDAY, MR & MRS E. A. COLLIER. Congratulatory telegrams from all parts of the North Island and the' good wishes from a wide circle of friends in the district were received, yesterday by Mr and Mrs E. A. Collier, of Dixon Street, Masterton, when they celebrated their golden wedding. Mr and Mrs Collier, who are well known and highly respected residents, have always taken a keen interest in community affairs. Yesterday afternoon and last night they were busy entertaining a large number of friends who assembled to convey their good wishes. Mr and Mrs Collier were the recipients of many beautiful floral emblems and gifts. Their health was proposed by Mr Charles Perry, who in an appropriate speech eulogised their exclent personal qualities. Their wedding took place at St Patrick’s Church, Masterton, on December 23, 1891. The bride’s maiden name was Anne Frances Walsh, and she was the fourth daughter of the late Michael and Hannah Walsh, of Limerick and Fermoy, Ireland. The bridegroom was the third son of Thomas and Anne Collier, of Masterton, and formerly of Stratford-on-Avon, England. Mrs Collier came to New Zealand in the “Coptic” in 1890. She was a member of the old hospital committee which existed prior to the. present . administration. During the war of 1914-18 Mrs Collier served on the Lady Liverpool Committee and during the day performed work in the mail-room at the Masterton Post Office.

Mr Collier came to New Zealand by the “Rodney” in 1875. He was engaged in wool-classing for many years. In 1915 he enlisted for overseas service. Mr Collier saw service in France, being a company sergeant-major. When he returned to New Zealand Mr Collier took up a Government farm at Mt Bruce but subsequently returned to wool-classing prior to his retirement.
