HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
FORTIFIER OF TROUBLED MINDS. In days of anxiety we are wisely recommended to read history to gain a sense of proportion and to acquire the long view, writes the Rev J. Stanley Perkins, in the “Manchester Guardian.” It may therefore be worth recalling that in the time of Napoleon France stretched from Danzig to Cadiz. The world seemed to be in French hands. The Emperor seemed to be unconquerable and was absorbing country after country. The pomp of his reviews on the Champ de Mars and his parades before the Tuileries echoed to the remotest hamlets. Proclamations of French victories were posted on every village wall. His military glory dazzled everyone. Where was it to end? The collapse came with amazing rapidity. The Empire tumbled like a pick of cards. When peace came men could scarcely believe it. If such a surprising break-up could happen once it can happen again. So perhaps today history may help to nerve us to the issue and' be a fortifier of troubled minds.
