RUBBER & PETROL
STRICT CONSERVATION IN AUSTRALIA NO MANUFACTURE OF TIRES FOR CIVIL USE. THREAT OF DRASTIC ACTION IF NECESSARY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Minister of Supply, Mr J. A. Beasley, announced a complete ban on the manufacture of tires for civil use. This drastic action is necessary to conserve supplies of raw rubber already in Australia for defence and other essential requirements. The manufacture of rubber floor coverings, matting and garden hoses has also been banned. Sales of existing stocks of motor and cycle tires will be reduced by fifty per cent, truck tires by 25 per cent and the production and sale of tennis and golf balls will be cut 50 per cent. Mr Curtin issued a warning that drastic action would be taken against motorists who used for holidaymaking petrol that must be conserved for war emergencies. The Prime Minister said he had been appalled when the holiday plans of some people were brought under his notice.
