Mrs Derek Forrest, Hawke’s Bay, is spending a holiday with Mrs A. Forrest, Essex Street, Masterton. Mrs M. Ford, Lincoln Road, Masterton, has received word that her son, Sergeant L. R. Ford, is safe and well. Mr J. C. Musson, Rangiora, is spending the Christmas holidays with Mr and Mrs R. H. Simpson, Dixon Street, Masterton.

The Hon. A. Hamilton, a member of the War Cabinet, was a passenger for the South Island from Wellington last night.

The engagement is announced of Louisa Dorothy (Been), elder daughter of Mr and Mrs R. A. Wilton, West Bush Road, Masterton, to Roy Jamps Udy, younger son of Mr and the late Mrs’T. U. Wellington, Lansdowne.

At a gathering last night of members of the Riverside Golf Club a presentation was made to a member, Mr S. Wyatt, who is on leave from camp. The presentation of a money belt was made by the president, Mr A. Carstens. Mr M. Manson (secretary) also spoke. Mr Wyatt acknowledged the gift. The appointment of 2nd-Lieutenant G. E. Beamish, 27th (Machine-gun) battalion, as a war correspondent with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, is announced in last night’s Gazette. Second-Lieutenant W. S. Jordan, New Zealand Divisional Cavalry, has relinquished his appointment as war correspondent. Professor F. Sinclaire, who occupies the Chair of English at Canterbury University College, will exchange positions for the first term of 1942 with Professor Gordon, who occupies the same chair at Victoria University College, Wellington. The exchange was authorised by the Canterbury University College Council at its meeting on Monday.

Mr E. G. R. Morley, of the Masterton railway station staff was entertained in Masterton recently prior to his joining up with the Royal New Zealand Air Force. In making presentations to Mr Morley and his wife, the Stationmaster, Mr R. Taylor, extended the good wishes of all present. He referred to Mr Morley’s good service in the Railways Department. Mr Morley returned thanks on behalf of his wife and himself.

In connection with the University of New Zealand diploma in banking examinations A-. W. White (Masterton) passed in book-keeping and accounts. In the B. Com.- examination, G. T. Cornick (Masterton) passed in mercantile law Stage I and law and joint stock companies, and J. B. Steel (Carterton) in mercantile law Stage 11, book-keeping and accounts HI and secretarial law and practice. Other passes secured by ex-Wairarapa High School or Wairarapa College pupils were:—B Com., economic geography, P M Cross; second professional examination for the degree of, M. 8., Ch.B., D. T. Beetham, G. M. Mprice. Pilot Officer F. J. Steel, son of Mr and Mrs F. J. Steel, of Napier, and formerly of Masterton, who left New Zealand for the front in August, 1940, has been promoted to the rank of Squadron Leader. He is the youngest active service squadron leader in Australasia and it is believed in the world. This is the third promotion he has received since leaving New Zealand. At present he is stationed at a post in ne Middle East. When in England recently, Squadron Leader Steel came in contact with Wing Commander Athol Fear, son of the late Mr F. Fear and Mrs Fear, of Masterton. Another son, Pilot Officer R. D. Steel, has been placed on active service in the New Zealand war area. A cousin of Squadron Leader Steel, Pilot Officer L. Mexted also of Masterton, has been attached to the New Zealand squadron at Home. _
