ATTACK ON HONG KONG
INTENSIFIED BY JAPANESE
Number of Landing Attempts Thrown Back CHINESE TROOPS ON MAINLAND ATTACKING STRONGLY ENDEAVOUR TO RELIEVE PRESSURE (By Telegraph.—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 11.0 a.in.) LONDON, December 17. The Japanese offensive against Hong Kong Island has been intensified since the Japanese surrender demand was rejected, but despite repeated bombing and shellings from the sea the island’s defenders have thrown back a number of attempts by the Japanese to effect a landing. A Chungking message states that the Chinese claim that they have inflicted heavy losses in their attacks on the rear of the Japanese forces. Chinese troops are at present strongly attacking and endeavouring to relieve pressure on besieged Hong Kong. They are making some progress throughout the Canton-Kowloon area. The Chinese are also attacking the Japanese south-west of Shanghai.
