AGAINST JAPANESE LANDING IN BORNEO bomber scores hit on enemy DESTROYER. FIRST RAID ON NETHERLANDS ISLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 9.35 a.m.) SINGAPORE, December 17. While executing landing operations at Miri, on the north-western coast of British Borneo, the Japanese were attacked by bombers of the Netherlands East Indies Navy. A Japanese destroyer, which was covering the landing of forces, received a direct hit. All the Netherlands planes returned. The first enemy attack, on the Netherlands East Indies (a British Official Wireless message states) is recorded by the Batavia radio, which states that enemy planes raided Serenta, in the Anamba Islands, midway between the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Some damage was caused. On the following day enemy planes also machine-gun-ned Serenta, but only a few casualties were caused. A Dutch patrol boat on December 16 was attacked by a large enemy bomber, but all the bombs missed their target.
