CENTRAL SCHOOL

SPORTS MEETING

CHRISTMAS TREE PARTY.

SUCCESSFUL GATHERINGS YESTERDAY.

Yesterday the Central School pupils held their sports gathering in the school recreation ground. A long and varied programme for both boys and girls was proceeded with and the events were all keenly contested. During the afternoon the infants had a Christmas tree party and an exceedingly happy time was spent in singing and games. Each child was given a present off the Christmas tree by Father Christmas (Mr W. R. Nicol). Ice creams were served to all. The opportunity was taken later by parents to inspect the children’s work displayed in the rooms, many laudatory remarks were passed in connection therewith. Much interest was displayed in the spinning wheel and the weaving machine in the special class room. In the evening the pupils of Form 2 held the usual end of the year party and the staff were the guests of the evening. An enjoyable programme of dancing, vocal and instrumental items was presented and supper, provided by the children, was served. Miss Pearce and Mr Coddington were handed tokens of the children’s esteem. Miss Pearce, who has been relieving teacher in Form 2 for the final term, thanked the pupils for their thoughtfulness. In the course of his reply Mr Coddington remarked what a fine class this one had proven to be and how well the pupils had shown their ability to work and displayed the right spirit in games and in their general attitude towards duty and service. He asked them to carry the tradition of Central School into the (world. He was sure they would face up to the difficulties well. Armed with the training they had received, they would, he felt sure, give a good account of themselves. The sports were held under the supervision of the headmaster, Mr E. G. Coddington, and conducted by the staff. Many good performances were registered including four new school records, Jim Geary setting 15ft. Ilin, in the senior long jump, Pat Ward 208 ft. in the cricket ball throw, John Geary 14ft. 2in. in the junior long jump (Eric Price and W. Winter also exceeded the previous best), and Les Corlett 32ft. 7 in. in the senior hop, step and jump.

The individual champions were:— Senior boys, James Geary; junior boys, John Geary; senior girls, Margaret Lyttle; junior girls, M. Hayward. The house championship went to Seddon House with 162 points, Grey House being second with 87 points.
