MARK OF THE BEAST

NAZIS DEFILE TOLSTOY MUSEUM. (Received This Day, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, December 16. While occupying Yasnayapolana, the Germans attempted to destroy everything connected with Count Leo Tolstoy’s name, says the “Pravda.” The Tolstoy museum was particularly singled out for acts of vandalism. Rare manuscripts, books and paintings were defiled. The Germans, before falling back, decided to burn the museum. Bonfires were started in several rooms, but civilians defied machine-gun fire, fought the flames for four hours, and prevented complete destruction of the museum.
