Conference Abandoned.

The New Zealand Presbyterian conference, which was to have been held at Napier shortly, has been abandoned in consequence of the travel restrictions. Extensive arrangements, including accommodation and catering for between 350 and 400 visitors, have been cancelled. Borough Work. 1

The paths and flanks of many Masterton streets were tar-sealed during the past month, the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported to the Masterton Borough Council last night. During the month six building permits were issued for a value of £l5lB, as compared with one permit for £lB in the corresponding period last year. Rail Car Services. So far there is no indication that the rail-car service on the Wairarapa line is to be affected by the Government’s measures to meet the Pacific war crisis. In the meantime, at least, no alteration is being made in the Wairarapa train or rail-car services. It is pointed out, too, that the restrictions announced in respect to travelling on the railways over distances greater than 100 miles do not come into operation before: Saturday.

Meat Production.

The official figures of killings for the present season at the Dominion’s freezing works from October 1 till November 29, as issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board, show that lamb killings total 383,370 carcases, compared with 156,835 carcases for the first two months of the 1940-41 season. Wether mutton killings are 30,658 carcases, and ewe mutton killings 10,252 carcases, compared with 1050 and 3240 carcases, respectively, for the same period last season. Greetings Telegrams.,

In connection with greetings telegrams for places within New Zealand the Postmaster-General (Mr P. C. Webb) stated yesterday that the acute shortage of staff in the post office had recently been accentuated by the release of further officers for the armed services, and it would, therefore, be necessary for the public to lodge their inland greetings telegrams not later than Monday next to ensure delivery by Christmas Day.
